Freelance writing is an adventure, but some weeks feel more like falling into a crater than climbing a mountain.
This week, I got the dreaded email notifying me that a company I was writing for is shifting editorial direction, which essentially means my contract is done.
Another company I felt almost certain would hire me after weeks of assessments sent a kind rejection today. They assured me my writing was top-notch, but others aligned more closely with their needs.
These things happen in freelancing. They just hit harder when you’re already wading through a slump and struggling with depression.
But every setback brings new relationships and lessons learned. One door closing means another may open, even if it currently feels like a trap door.
Thankfully, years of reading adventure stories have taught me that sometimes, even a trap door leads to unexpected treasure.

I am a writer, so I write. When I am not writing, I will eat candy, drink beer, and destroy small villages.
