As promised, I am bringing back the weekly Media Diary. For those not familiar, the concept is listing the various entertainment I've watched, read, listened to, or played in a given week. This also allows me to provide short reviews of the works that I didn't have time to write a full review but allows for my completist nature to be satisfied and gives me a chance to champion more wonderful art.
The first one is going to be a bit more broad covering the last few weeks rather than just one week. Also, since I didn't keep a record, it will be more of a highlight reel or what I remember off the top of my head. It will be far more thorough in the future.
What I Watched
Ryan George YouTube Videos: I've got to promote my fellow Canadian. It is easily one of the most funny and creative collections of short videos. In case you don't know him, he plays every character in a series of comedy vignettes, If you like to laugh then check him out.
Pitch Meeting Videos: It is the great Ryan George again, but this time it is a collection of skits where he plays a screenwriter and a movie studio executive in a pitch meeting for popular movies. It is a satirical and funny way to explore how some crazy ideas may have been given life in major motion pictures. Once again, if you haven't seen them then you should. Watching them is 'tight'!
Jeremy Jahns' Top Ten Best Movies of 2024: I've been following film reviewer Jeremy Jahns for years, and it is an annual tradition to check out his top ten list. He seems to have become much crustier and cynical over the years, but I still enjoy seeing his takes even if I find I disagree more and more with them. He is still one of the best and most entertaining reviewers on YouTube.
Jeremy Jahns' Top Ten Worst Movies of 2024: For those that like a good takedown.
Jeremy Jahns' Top Ten Most Anticipated of 2025: I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't the usual 'biggest upcoming movies' list as it can often be with these types of videos.
Chris Stuckman's The Best Movies of 2024: I've been following Stuckmann even longer than Jahns, while I feel like our tastes are similar, I obviously still often disagree with what he sees as the best. This is the point of art. It is subjective. These lists are also a great way to be alerted to movies that I've missed. I've missed far too many the last two years.
Chris Stuckmann's Most Anticipated Movies of 2025: Get aboard the hype train!
3C Films' Best and Worst of 2024: I watched this after a fellow cast mate and friend continued to recommend this YouTube critics channel. I liked it, and it will likely enter into the rotation.
Adam Does Movies - Top Ten Worst Movies of 2024: The same person also recommended this YouTube movie critic, and I also really dig the style and energy.
Adam Does Movies- Top Ten Best Movies of 2024: If you watch the one, then you need to watch the other.
One Piece: Last year, Everettt asked if I'd watch this series with him, and I agreed completely due to a desire to have something to share with him but I wasn't too excited about a hyperactive anime series. But I'm hooked now with its colourful characters, creative worldbuilding, and a blend of action with comedy. We are currently over 200 episodes in and for One Piece fans, we're finishing up the Silver Fox story arc. My favourite story arc so far was Arabasta.
Bluey: This is what I've occasionally watched with Danika. It is awesome.
Charlie and the Chocolat Factory: This was a live stage musical at the Brantford Sanderson Centre put on by the terrific Playful Foc Productions. It was a little odd watching a show by them rather than being in it. The cast was incredible and it was a fun show.
A Christmas Story: This was another live stage musical, and this one was put on by Theatre Aquarius. I was blown away by the sets, and it ranks as one of my favourite live musicals. It helps it is based on a beloved movie from my childhood.
What I Read
1440 Daily Digest: For the last few years, I've been subscribing to a daily newsletter that compiles all the major news items. It is an American company so that is the main focus, but it covers major news from around the world and is fairly neutral in its stance.
Danny the Champion of the World: I love Roald Dahl, so it has been a blast reading this classic novel to Danika.
BFG: I actually have been going through every Roald Dahl novel with Danika, and this is the current one we're going through.
'Music Man' script: Reasons. . .
'Murder on the Orient Express' script: More reasons. . .
Wicked: Seemed like a good time to read this novel by Gregory Maguire again. I enjoy the world-building and many of the themes. The novel is far more sexual than the adaptations of this work, but it continues the strong female-empowering themes from the original Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum.
What I Listened To
F This Movie: Our Favourite Movies of 2024: I've been listening to this Patrick Bromley-hosted podcast for years, and the year-end show is always a major highlight.
'Music Man; soundtrack: More reasons. . .
Disney Animated Movie Songs: Because of Danika. And they are catchy.
Things I've Played:
Rabbids: Party of Legends: This a fun little party game for the Switch the family has played a few times during the holidays.
Luffy's Bento Panic The Game: A board/card game based on One Piece where you try to get the most food tokens on your board. It is pretty easy and fun, and sure we will play it many more times as a family.
Flamecraft: A board game filled with cute dragons. What else could you ask? It is a strategy game that at first seemed really complicated but after a round was pretty straightforward. Another very fun game.
Wyrmspan: Another dragon board game. This was very addictive, but not one we own. Like every game above, I did not win.
Mahjong: My sister came to visit from Japan, and wanted to learn this game. It has been a few years, and it was a blast to play again. I did not win this either.
What have you watched, played, read, or listened to recently?
