Time Flies Yet Again: Back to School 2024

It doesn't feel that long ago that I was taking Everett to school for the very first time. Today marks the start of Everett's last year in elementary school

Wait.

What?!?

As one prone to wander down nostalgia lane and sigh heavily over my kids' constant aging, this morning was a bit of an emotional dropkick recognizing Everett is now in Grade 8 and just a few months away from becoming. . . gasp. . a teenager.

When Everett was very young, we used to joke about how 'no teenagers are allowed in my house' and Everett giggled while stating he'd become a teenager soon. I didn't realize back then how close we were to 'soon'.

I now have a kid going into Grade 8 and another sauntering on into Grade 4. I am ridiculously proud of who they have both become over the years.

Everett has always been a very strong academic student, but I've been overjoyed learning he will often assist kids who are struggling in math or French.

Danika is one of the friendliest and most inclusive people I've ever met, and it is magical seeing how easily she makes friends and leaves a positive impact on all she meets.

Both my kids haven't shied away from challenging themselves and trying new things. We've talked about their adventures in musicals and plays on the stage, but they've also in the past year done gymnastics, singing lessons, and various clubs. They allow their curiosity to soar and I hope they never lose their interest in new challenges.

Everett is an introvert, but he hasn't allowed that to stop him from taking on public speaking or including new kids in his group. I know it takes effort, but I'm so proud he dares to push himself in social settings.

Danika has always lived outside the box, and I love seeing her passion for art and trying out new ways to express herself.

The school year will present several new challenges and adventures, and I look forward to being there for my kids and watching them grow and develop further. They will both have opportunities to expand their knowledge, take on new activities, and grasp chances to be leaders.

As always, seeing my kids accomplish these tasks and become better people daily, inspires me to follow that path and keep on striving to be better. It is a new school year, but it is also a new season where we all can strive to be better.

I may not love that my kids grow up so fast, but I do love who they've become, and I'm excited to be there for all the amazing adventures.

How was your first day of school?
